Middle East crisis: President Meloni’s telephone conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu

As part of her ongoing conversations on the crisis in the Middle East, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had another call today with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. 

President Meloni reaffirmed the strong hope that an agreement can be found for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, in line with United Nations Security Council resolution 2735, at the next round of negotiations on 15 August. President Meloni reiterated firm support for the mediation efforts led by the United States, Egypt and Qatar.

Acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself, the President of the Council of Ministers also stressed the importance of de-escalation at regional level, including along the Israel-Lebanon border where United Nations peacekeeping force UNIFIL is present, in which Italy plays a leading role.
