Statement by President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni on the sixth anniversary of the Morandi Bridge collapse

14 Agosto 2024

Remembrance, rebirth, justice.

Six years have passed since the Morandi Bridge collapsed on 14 August 2018, a catastrophe that shook Genoa, Liguria and the entire nation.

Today, we pay tribute to the 43 victims of that tragedy, and our hearts and minds go out to their families and loved ones. Today we all feel somewhat like we are from Genoa too, sons and daughters of such a proud city that was left emotionally distressed and physically split in two, but has also since been able to pick itself up and move forward.

Genoa has been reborn, stronger and more tenacious than before. The San Giorgio Bridge, whose construction was an example of efficiency, innovation and engineering expertise, is one of the most powerful symbols of this new course.

However, that bridge also reminds the nation of the many, too many, questions that remain unanswered. Seeing justice done and identifying those responsible for what happened, ascertaining once and for all the faults and omissions that took place, is not only a legal duty but a moral one too.

We reiterate our hope that the judicial proceedings can be brought to a close as swiftly as possible, because Genoa, Liguria and Italy are waiting to learn the truth about what happened, as determined by the court.
