Former Ilva steel plant in Taranto: Government meets with trade union organisations

The Government met with trade union organisations at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in Rome today, to discuss the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto. During the meeting, the Government informed the trade unions about the outcome of the negotiations held on Monday 8 January with the majority shareholder ArcelorMittal. The Government delegation informed attendees that it is working diligently in order to settle negotiations with ArcelorMittal and swiftly identify the path for the plant’s future within a clear and defined framework whose primary goal is to ensure the company keeps producing.

President Meloni’s telephone conversation with Chancellor Scholz

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation this afternoon with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Olaf Scholz. The two Heads of Government discussed the main international and European issues ahead of the extraordinary European Council meeting to be held on February 1st, focusing in particular on military and financial support to Ukraine. President Meloni also presented the priorities of the Italian G7 Presidency.

Former Ilva steel plant in Taranto: Government meets with ArcelorMittal

During the meeting held today at Palazzo Chigi with ArcelorMittal regarding the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto, the Government delegation proposed the subscription of a share capital increase, worth EUR 320 million, to the company’s top management, which would contribute to raising the public shareholder Invitalia’s stake in the company to 66%, together with the amount necessary to guarantee the continuity of production. The Government has taken note of ArcelorMittal’s unwillingness to make financial and investment commitments, even as a minority shareholder, and has instructed Invitalia to take the subsequent decisions via its legal team. The Government will call a meeting with the trade union organisations, to be held in the afternoon of Thursday 11 January.

President Meloni’s statement on the anniversary of the assassination of Piersanti Mattarella

Today, Italy honours the memory of Piersanti Mattarella, who was killed by the mafia in Palermo on 6 January 1980. He is one of the many heroes who, with their courage and integrity, have shown the Italian people that it is possible to fight organised crime and handle public affairs without giving in to the foulness of moral compromise. Forty-four years have passed since his sacrifice, but time has not in the least diminished the strength of Piersanti Mattarella’s example. It is also in his name that we will continue our daily commitment to rid our homeland of the mafia ‘cancer’, once and for all.

President Meloni’s telephone conversation with President Zelensky

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, which was the first with an international leader since the beginning of the Italian G7 Presidency. Expressing solidarity for the victims of the recent Russian bombings across Ukrainian territory, President Meloni assured President Zelensky that the issue of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine will be at the centre of Italy’s G7 Presidency and confirmed that the Italian Government will continue to support the Ukrainian Authorities in all areas, with the goal of achieving a just and lasting peace.
