President Meloni and Undersecretary of State Mantovano in Sicily following the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro
The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, travelled to Palermo this morning to meet with the District Prosecutor of Palermo, Maurizio de Lucia, the judicial officers who coordinated the investigation and the Carabinieri agents from the ‘ROS’ [Special Operations Group] who carried out the arrest of the notorious fugitive mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro. She later addressed journalists at a doorstep. Before arriving at the Prosecutor’s Office, President Meloni and Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano observed a minute’s silence in front of the memorial honouring the victims of the Capaci bombing.

President Meloni’s statement on the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro
“This is a great victory for the state, showing that it does not give up in the face of the mafia”, commented President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni on the news of the arrest of Matteo Messina Denaro. “The day after the anniversary of Totò Riina’s arrest, another organised crime boss has been brought to justice. My sincerest thanks, along with those of the entire Government, go to the police forces, and in particular the ‘ROS’ [Special Operations Group] of the Carabinieri, to the National Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office and to the Palermo Public Prosecutor’s Office, for the capture of the most significant exponent of mafia-related crime. The Government – continued President Meloni – ensures that the fight against the mafia will continue unabated, as shown by the fact that the first measure we introduced (defending the hard prison regime for mafia convicts) referred precisely to this issue”.

“Since entering office, this Government has worked to sign the first Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers regarding the essential works that cannot be postponed for the organisation of the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee. Rome and the whole of Italy are getting ready to celebrate this event, which is inextricably linked to the very identity of the Eternal City, capital of Christianity and home to the State of the Vatican City. There is a lot of work to be done and, in close collaboration with the Holy See and Roma Capitale, we will provide our full cooperation and commitment to ensure that the nation and its capital city are ready to host millions of pilgrims from all over the world and experience the historic Jubilee event”.

Undersecretary of State Mantovano presents the Decree initiating works for the Jubilee of 2025
Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alfredo Mantovano, together with the Mayor of Rome and Special Commissioner for the Jubilee 2025, Roberto Gualtieri, held a press conference today to illustrate the Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers that approves and initiates the essential works, which cannot be postponed, to enable the city of Rome to welcome pilgrims and tourists in view of the Catholic Church’s Jubilee in 2025.

A steering committee meeting for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (‘NRRP’) was held today at Palazzo Chigi, chaired by the Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy and the NRRP, Raffaele Fitto, to review progress together with central, regional and local administrations. The meeting was also attended by the President of the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, Massimiliano Fedriga, the President of ANCI [National Association of Italian Municipalities], Antonio De Caro, and the President of UPI [Union of Italian Provinces], Michele De Pascale.
