President Meloni meets with Prime Minister Kishida of Japan
The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, met today with the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, at Palazzo Chigi. During the particularly cordial meeting, the two Heads of Government discussed the comprehensive bilateral agenda between Italy and Japan, including cooperation in the fields of politics, economics and trade, culture and security. They also had an in-depth exchange of views on the G7 work programme, in the context both of the Japanese Presidency (2023) and subsequent Italian Presidency (2024) of the Group and of the major global challenges.

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, was received in audience by the Holy Father Pope Francis at the Vatican Apostolic Palace today. The President of the Council of Ministers subsequently met with His Holiness' Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher.

Meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen
The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, met today with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at Palazzo Chigi. After their meeting in Brussels during the President of the Council of Ministers’ first foreign visit, today’s meeting, which was also attended by Minister Raffaele Fitto, provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views ahead of the special European Council meeting to be held on 9-10 February, which will particularly focus on the economy and migration. With regard to economic recovery, the Italian Government’s commitment to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (‘NRRP’) was also reaffirmed. During the meeting, the two leaders also shared their condemnation of the violent acts in Brazil and their solidarity with the country’s democratic institutions. They also expressed satisfaction regarding the signing of the EU-NATO joint declaration, scheduled for tomorrow in Brussels.

Flags on public buildings at half-mast for funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
On the occasion of the solemn funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers has ordered Italian and European Union flags on public buildings throughout the country to fly at half-mast on 5 January 2023.
