President Meloni chairs first meeting of G7 Heads of State and Government under the Italian Presidency

On February 24th, on the second anniversary of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, chaired a meeting of the G7 Heads of State and Government. President Meloni joined from Kyiv, together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

The meeting confirmed the G7’s strong unity in supporting Kyiv as well as the determination to continue providing Ukraine with assistance and to strengthen sanctions against Moscow and against entities that allow sanctions to be circumvented. The Seven also asked that the Russian authorities shed light on the circumstances surrounding the death of Alexei Navalny, condemning the continued repression of political dissidents in Russia.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for an in-depth discussion on the situation in the Middle East, in light of the concerning increase in tensions in the region, including the Red Sea.

At the end of the meeting, a joint declaration on Ukraine was adopted.
