The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, chaired the first meeting of the Mattei Plan Steering Committee at Palazzo Chigi today. The Committee’s duties are the following: to coordinate the Government’s work with African Nations; to finalise the Plan and keep it constantly up to date; to monitor implementation of the Plan; and, to approve the annual report to Parliament.
In addition to the Ministries involved and the Conference of Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the meeting was also attended by representatives from several State agencies and companies as well as representatives from publicly-owned enterprises, universities, research entities and the third sector that are involved in cooperation and development. The composition of the steering committee is such that other public and private entities may also become involved and attend meetings depending on the issues and measures on the agenda.
Today’s meeting went over the six pillars of the Mattei Plan (education and training; health; water and hygiene; agriculture; energy; infrastructure) and the pilot projects that have already been launched in nine African nations (Algeria, Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique and Tunisia) as part of the Plan’s initial implementation phase. The meeting also reviewed the first operational missions that have been carried out by the Mattei Plan Task Force and the next ones scheduled. In this regard, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, is also scheduled to visit Egypt on March 17th.
