President Meloni’s telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Israel

8 July 2024

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to review the situation in Gaza and in the region.

Confirming the State of Israel’s right to defend itself, President Meloni expressed her hope that a sustainable ceasefire would be reached as soon as possible along with the release of hostages being held by Hamas, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2735 and mediation efforts by the United States.

The telephone conversation also highlighted that both leaders agree on the need to boost humanitarian aid for the civilian population in Gaza and to prevent an escalation of tensions along the border between Israel and Lebanon, where Italy is at the forefront of ensuring stability in the area through its participation in the UNIFIL mission.
