President Meloni attends extraordinary European Council meeting held by video conference

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, participated in the extraordinary European Council meeting held by video conference, which was convened by President Charles Michel to discuss the attack by Hamas against Israel and the implications of the ongoing conflict, also with reference to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

In line with the statement agreed by the 27 members of the European Council already on Sunday 15 October, the video conference confirmed the EU’s strong unity in condemning Hamas and supporting Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international humanitarian law. 
The meeting also reaffirmed Europe’s diplomatic commitment to the release of hostages and the protection of Palestinian civilians as well as foreign nationals in the Gaza Strip.

The President of the Council of Ministers also expressed deepest condolences, both on behalf of Italy and personally, to Prime Minister De Croo of Belgium and Prime Minister Kristersson of Sweden for last night’s serious attack in Brussels.
