President Meloni meets with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, met today with the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, at Palazzo Chigi.
The meeting confirmed the strategic nature of the partnership between the two nations and the commitment to continue deepening cooperation in all areas of interest, starting with energy, also ahead of Azerbaijan’s presidency of the upcoming COP29, which will be held in Baku in November.

The President of the Council of Ministers also reiterated Italy’s commitment to the Caucasus region’s stability and prosperity as well as its support for the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the goal of achieving lasting peace. 

President Meloni highlighted that the European Union’s role forms an integral part of this process and that cooperation with the EU can open new opportunities for the entire region, also in terms of connectivity.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the two leaders to have an in-depth discussion on the main issues on the international agenda and to explore common synergies in the context of the Mattei Plan.

Following the meeting, ENI and SOCAR signed three memoranda of understanding in the areas of energy security, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the biofuel production chain.
