President Meloni meets with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a cordial bilateral meeting with the President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, in the margins of the G20 Summit.
President Meloni expressed the Italian Government’s interest in promoting mutual economic interests, also with a view to increasing Italian exports to China. At the same time, President Xi and President Meloni acknowledged the ancient relationship between Italy and China, two age-old civilisations, underlining the success of the Italy-China Year of Culture. President Xi recalled the messages exchanged with President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on that occasion.
During the meeting, EU-China relations were also touched upon, with the hope being expressed that they will be reinvigorated. President Meloni stressed the importance of resuming all channels of dialogue, including on human rights.
The need was recognised to work together in order to effectively manage the most serious and pressing global and regional challenges. President Meloni and President Xi paid particular attention to the war in Ukraine and its consequences. They agreed on the need to support all diplomatic initiatives to bring the conflict to an end and to avoid escalation.
At the end of the meeting, President Xi invited the President of the Council of Ministers to pay a visit to China, and President Meloni accepted.
