President Meloni’s statement on evacuation of Italian nationals from Sudan

“After a day of anxious waiting, all our compatriots in Sudan who have asked to leave have been evacuated. With them, there are also foreign nationals. Italy does not leave anyone behind. I wish to thank all those who have participated in this difficult operation, in the middle of a combat zone, and I applaud Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crisis Unit, Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano, Chief of Defence Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Joint Operations Headquarters Commander General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, our Ambassador in Sudan, Michele Tommasi, and the Security Services. I also want to take this opportunity to renew my call for an end to the war, for an opening of negotiations to lead to a civilian-led government; Sudan needs peace.”
