President Meloni’s statement on healthcare waiting lists

24 July 2024

The Government’s decree regarding healthcare waiting lists has become law.

After increasing the healthcare fund to its highest ever level, we have today taken further steps forward to guarantee citizens’ right to health. We are establishing a national monitoring of waiting lists, accompanied by an effective system of controls. With the regional centralised appointment booking system, we are expanding the services on offer, making available those provided both by the public health system and by accredited private healthcare providers. We are ensuring citizens always get the service they need, also by turning to so-called ‘intramoenia’ services (private healthcare services provided within public facilities) and accredited private medical centres. Starting from 2025, we are scrapping the spending cap for the recruitment of doctors and healthcare staff, and we are reducing taxes on their pay for the additional services that are needed to cut waiting list times.

We are aware there is still much to be done, but we are convinced that the direction taken to build a more efficient healthcare system that is closer to citizens’ needs is the right one.

Let’s keep it up.
