Statement by President Meloni on 44th anniversary of the Bologna bombing
2 August 2024
The Bologna train station bombing is one of the most dramatic events in Italy’s history. On 2 August 1980, that act of terrorism, which rulings have attributed to members of neo-fascist organisations, dealt the nation the most ferocious of blows. 44 years on from that terrible attack, the whole of Italy extends its sympathies to the city of Bologna and the victims’ families once again.
We join them in their grief and their demand for justice. Our thanks also go to them for the tenacity and determination they have put into their search for the truth. Getting to the truth about the terrorist attacks that bloodied Italy in the post-war period also involves the work this Government is doing, together with all State administrations and building on the steps taken by previous governments, to transfer declassified documents to the Central State Archive.
At the same time, I am deeply and personally concerned by the unjustified and excessive attacks that have been directed towards myself and the Government on this day of commemoration.
Claims that the roots of that attack are today a fully fledged part of the right-wing government, or that the justice reform this Government has introduced takes its inspiration from plans by the P2 Masonic Lodge, are very serious indeed, and they are dangerous, also for the personal safety of those who have been democratically elected by citizens and are only trying to do their best for the good of this nation.
In this growing climate of hate, I believe that words and actions are getting out of hand, even for the wisest of people. I appeal to everyone to return to a framework of normal dialogue within what, thanks to the sacrifices of so many, is now a solid and mature democracy.
