Statement by Palazzo Chigi on the situation in Venezuela

The Italian Government continues to follow the situation in Venezuela with great concern, in close coordination with international partners. Italy calls upon the Venezuelan authorities to respect the rights of all citizens and to free all political opponents, firmly condemning any threat to or deprivation of civil liberties.

Italy’s support for efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire agreement

9 August 2024

Italy supports the efforts by the United States, Egypt and Qatar to reach an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, in line with United Nations Security Council resolution 2735. A ceasefire in Gaza is becoming increasingly urgent to bring an end to the suffering of the civilian population, guarantee the necessary humanitarian aid and encourage de-escalation at regional level. Italy urges all parties to the conflict to take up the mediators’ invitation, without further delay, to resume negotiations in Doha on 15 August with the aim of finalising an agreement.

President Meloni’s telephone conversation with President Pezeshkian

As part of the conversations she has been holding over the last few days on the situation in the Middle East, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone call today with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.

AISI deputy director appointed

8 August 2024

With a Decree of the President of the Council of Ministers (‘DPCM’) signed by President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni, the deputy director of the Internal Information and Security Agency (‘Agenzia Informazioni e Sicurezza Interna’, ‘AISI’), Giuseppe Del Deo, has been appointed deputy director of the Security Intelligence Department (‘Dipartimento delle informazioni per la sicurezza’, ‘DIS’). The current acting deputy chief of the Italian State Police, Prefect Vittorio Rizzi, is to be appointed as the new deputy director of AISI. Both decrees will be effective as of 2 September.

President Meloni’s statement on 68th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy

The tragedy that happened on 8 August 1956 at the Bois du Cazier mine in Marcinelle, in Belgium, will be forever etched in Italian and European history. Italy suffered the greatest loss: 136 out of 262 miners were our compatriots. They were Italians who had made the difficult and painful decision to leave their land to support, with dignity and spirit of service, the nation that had welcomed them. They did so undemandingly, with humbleness and dedication. A dark mine thousands of miles away from where they were born may have claimed their lives, but the memory of those sons of Italy lives on in our national community’s gratitude.

Following the meeting, Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy and the NRRP Raffaele Fitto, Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti, Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Maurizio Leo held a press conference to illustrate the measures adopted.

36 Libyan children with serious oncological conditions to be transferred to Italy: first patient arrives in Rome

The first of 36 Libyan children with serious oncological conditions who will be moved to Italy for emergency treatment will be arriving in Rome later today, accompanied by his mother. The boy has a serious form of leukaemia and needs an immediate bone marrow transplant.

President Meloni’s telephone conversation with the King of Jordan

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with King Abdullah II of Jordan. President Meloni expressed her deep concern for the growing tensions in the Middle East, and thanked King Abdullah for his leadership in the tireless pursuit of sustainable peace, agreeing with him on the absolute need to avoid the conflict spreading to the rest of the region.

European Commission pays Italy fifth NRRP instalment

5 August 2024

The European Commission has today paid Italy the fifth instalment of its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), worth EUR 11 billion. The payment follows the Commission’s positive assessment, formally adopted on 2 July, of Italy’s fulfilment of 53 milestones and targets related to the fifth instalment of its NRRP.
