“The arrest of the dangerous fugitive Antonio Strangio in Bali marks the third of its kind in a matter of days, following the capture of Edgardo Greco in France after 17 years at large, and of Matteo Messina Denaro. I wish to express my satisfaction and warmest congratulations to all the intelligence, public security and police forces who allow these extraordinary results to be achieved. The fight against crime and against all forms of illegality remains a priority objective of our Government”.

President Meloni’s statement on the work of Italian firefighters in Türkiye

“At present, based on the information available, the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) teams of Italian firefighters in Türkiye have managed to save two young people in two separate rescue operations in Antioch, and are working to save others. I wish to send encouragement and heartfelt thanks to our altruistic compatriots who are bringing real help to the people affected by this apocalyptic earthquake, with their specific expertise in urban search and rescue operations”.

President Meloni in Milan

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, was in Milan today, where she met with the Metropolitan City’s Mayor, Giuseppe Sala, and heads of the public security forces. Following the meeting, which was held at the city’s Prefecture, President Meloni addressed journalists at a doorstep.

President Meloni’s call with President Sánchez

Following yesterday’s calls ahead of the special European Council meeting on 9-10 February, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation today with the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez. The exchange of views focused on comprehensive European support for Ukraine, EU solutions to support the competitiveness of enterprises and finally having European management of migration flows, centred on the external dimension and border control.

NRRP Steering Committee Meeting

6 February 2023

A steering committee meeting for the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (‘NRRP’) was held today to begin discussions on the new chapter to be included in the NRRP relating to REPowerEU, the European plan to address the global energy market difficulties caused by the war in Ukraine. The meeting was held in the presence of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, the Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policy and the NRRP, Raffaele Fitto, and all other relevant ministers. The managing directors of Enel, Eni, Snam and Terna, Italy’s main energy and electricity sector operators, also attended the meeting.

Meeting held at Palazzo Chigi on global cyber attack

6 February 2023

With regard to the cyberattack that has occurred worldwide, Undersecretary of State Alfredo Mantovano, delegated authority for cybersecurity, coordinated a meeting at Palazzo Chigi this morning with Director General of the National Cybersecurity Agency (‘ACN’) Roberto Baldoni and Director General of the Security Intelligence Department (‘DIS’) Elisabetta Belloni to verify that, despite the seriousness of the incident, in Italy no institutions or leading companies operating in sectors of key importance for national security have been affected.  An initial assessment carried out by the ACN together with the Postal and Communications Police has not revealed any evidence of an attack by a hostile state or similar; it is instead likely to be an act by cybercriminals demanding payment of a ‘ransom’.

European Council meeting on 9-10 February: President Meloni’s calls with President Macron, Prime Minister Rutte, Federal Chancellor Nehammer and Prime Minister Mitsotakis

Following her meetings in Stockholm and Berlin on 3 February, President of the Council of Ministers Giorgia Meloni had a series of telephone conversations today, with President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron, with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, with Austrian Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer and with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ahead of the special European Council meeting to be held on 9-10 February. The exchanges of views focused on the priority of a concrete sign from the European Council on full and comprehensive support for Ukraine, and on EU solutions to support the competitiveness of enterprises and to finally have European management of migration flows, centred on the external dimension and border control.
